Green Ammonia & Veggie Waste Startups Bag Millions in AgriTech Boom

This week marked a flurry of financial activity in the agrifoodtech sector, with several companies securing significant funding, hinting at a vibrant and rapidly evolving industry landscape.

In a major stride towards sustainable agriculture, Talus Renewables announced the closure of a $22 million Series A funding round for its innovative modular green ammonia system. The investment, co-led by Material Impact and Xora Innovation, underscores the increasing interest in technologies that can help reduce the agricultural sector’s carbon footprint. Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy, is seen as a potential game-changer for providing a cleaner alternative to conventional nitrogen fertilizers, which are energy-intensive and a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, Letoon Holdings, a company that specializes in transforming vegetable waste into valuable products, has successfully raised £20 million ($25 million) from Nimbus Capital. The investment is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of waste management and circular economy principles in the food industry. Letoon Holdings has also set its sights on an initial public offering (IPO) by no later than September 30, 2024, signaling confidence in its business model and future prospects.

The online grocery sector is also witnessing a consolidation trend, as illustrated by the acquisition of US-based FreshDirect by quick-delivery startup Getir. This move by Getir, which is set to acquire FreshDirect from Ahold Delhaize, suggests that the online grocery market is ripe for mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as companies seek to enhance their omnichannel offerings and streamline their operations.

In the realm of partnerships, the week saw a notable collaboration between InnerPlant, a startup that has developed technology to detect plant signals, and agricultural giants Deere and Syngenta. This “Dream(farm) team” is set to tackle the challenge of soybean fungus, combining InnerPlant’s innovative plant-signal technology with Syngenta’s crop protection treatments and Deere’s See & Spray technology. This partnership could pave the way for more precise and sustainable agricultural practices, reducing the reliance on broad-spectrum chemical applications.

Funding rounds were aplenty as Dreamfarm secured €5 million ($5.4 million) to further its development of plant-based mozzarella and other “cheeses.” This investment, coming from two accomplished entrepreneurs, will aid Dreamfarm in establishing a production facility, highlighting the continued investor interest in the plant-based food sector.

In the agtech space, Aigen raised $12 million in a Series A round to scale its solar agriculture robotics, a promising development for the future of autonomous farming. Similarly, Cromatic, which provides a platform for outsourcing R&D in biotech companies, raised $5.3 million in a seed round led by AgFunder and LifeX.

On the cutting-edge front, Heali emerged from stealth mode with a personalized nutrition platform, securing a $3 million seed round. The Heali app aims to revolutionize how individuals manage their diets by offering meal planning, tracking, and dietician-backed nutritional guidance.

The week also witnessed strategic collaborations aimed at enhancing sustainability in agriculture. EarthOptics partnered with Trace Genomics to refine soil carbon measurement technology, a critical component in the fight against climate change. Additionally, the phosphate fertilizer producer OCP Group teamed up with Regrow & University Mohammed VI Polytechnic to create a measuring, reporting, and verification system tailored to African soils.

As the agrifoodtech sector continues to attract investment and foster collaborations, it becomes increasingly clear that innovation is at the heart of addressing some of the most pressing challenges in food production and sustainability. From reducing waste and emissions to enhancing nutrition and food security, the developments of this week are indicative of a dynamic industry poised to make significant contributions to a more sustainable future.
