Dutch Farmers Embrace Tech Revolution for Enhanced Productivity and Ease

In the picturesque Dutch coastal town of Zoutelande, where the fresh sea air mingles with sprawling fields, the Wisse family is redefining traditional farming through innovative technology. Jos Wisse, a fourth-generation farmer, is at the helm of a 45-hectare arable farm that produces a diverse array of crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, and flowers. Recently, the Wisse family embraced advanced agricultural technology by integrating the Ag Leader SteerCommand Z2 steering system with a SteadySteer motor into their operations. This decision, made after a decade of contemplation, is transforming their farming practices, enhancing productivity, and improving the overall farming experience.

The journey toward automation began ten years ago when the Wisse family recognized the physical toll of manual steering on their tractors. “We were ready to start using an autopilot,” Jos recalls. The constant need to turn the steering wheel to maintain a straight line was not only exhausting but also limited their operational hours. The introduction of the autopilot system has allowed them to work longer hours, even under challenging conditions such as darkness, fog, or dust. The ease of use is evident; Jos quips that with the autopilot engaged, he could almost check the news on his phone while farming. “It’s much more relaxing, and there’s also greater precision with a steering system like this,” he adds.

The financial commitment to the new technology was significant, but the Wisse family anticipated a notable improvement in productivity. By repositioning their seeding machines and modifying their implements, they have streamlined their operations. For instance, the beet seeder is now centrally attached behind the rotary harrow, eliminating the need for an additional pass for seeding. This innovative approach not only saves time but also optimizes the use of resources.

Jos operates two modern tractors, a John Deere 6125M and a Deutz-Fahr 5110TTV, both equipped with Ag Leader GPS technology. The farm’s third tractor, a vintage John Deere 1030 from 1983, has also been retrofitted with the SteadySteer motor. This seamless integration of new technology with older machinery exemplifies the adaptability of modern farming practices. Jos explains that the SteerCommand Z2 system, which utilizes multiple satellite systems such as GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou, ensures high accuracy and reliability in navigation.

The user-friendly interface of the Ag Leader system has been a game-changer for the Wisse family. The InCommand 1200 monitor allows for split-screen functionality, enabling simultaneous adjustments to the implement while managing the tractor’s driving lines. Jos appreciates the efficiency of the system, noting that it requires minimal steps to start working in the fields. “You select an implement combination, then choose a field, and the system automatically creates a task,” he explains. This streamlined process not only saves time but also enhances the overall efficiency of their operations.

One of the standout features of the SteerCommand Z2 system is its ability to minimize overlap and underlap during field operations. With precise control over implements, the Wisse family can optimize their use of resources, reducing waste and improving the effectiveness of their applications. “The section width shutoff is also better now because you can specify exactly when sections should be closed,” Jos notes, highlighting the system’s advanced capabilities.

As the Wisse family continues to adapt to these technological advancements, they are witnessing tangible benefits in productivity and operational efficiency. Jos estimates that they now use the autopilot for about 90 percent of their work, allowing for greater focus on crop monitoring and other essential tasks. His father, initially hesitant about the technology, is gradually embracing the autopilot system, further showcasing the potential for innovation in traditional farming.

The Wisse family’s experience underscores a significant trend in agriculture, where the fusion of traditional practices with cutting-edge technology is paving the way for a more efficient and sustainable future. As farmers like Jos Wisse leverage advanced systems like the Ag Leader SteerCommand Z2, they are not only enhancing their productivity but also redefining the landscape of modern farming.
