Honeywell and IISc Join Forces to Propel Deep-Tech Start-Ups in India

In a significant move to bolster innovation in India, Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation (HHSIF), the philanthropic arm of Honeywell, has partnered with the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID), the incubation wing of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. This collaboration has resulted in a funding commitment of over ₹8.5 crore directed towards more than 40 deep-tech start-ups, alongside the facilitation of nine entrepreneurship-in-residence (EIR) programs.

The focus for HHSIF in the current fiscal year (FY24) has been diverse, supporting 13 innovative ventures that include eight start-ups and five EIR programs. These initiatives span key sectors such as agritech, cleantech, healthtech, and greentech. Notably, half of the supported ventures are in the MedTech sector, while 20% are dedicated to agritech, highlighting a growing recognition of the importance of technology in agriculture. As the initiative progresses into FY25, HHSIF has pledged to support seven start-ups and one EIR program in related sectors, further solidifying its commitment to nurturing the deep-tech ecosystem.

The partnership between HHSIF and FSID, which has been ongoing since FY21, not only provides financial support but also extends a comprehensive range of resources. These include research assistance, access to advanced technology, skilled human capital, and a vast network of high-net-worth individuals, venture capitalists, and micro, small, and medium enterprises. This multifaceted approach is designed to empower start-ups to scale their operations and enhance their market readiness.

Raj Waghray, Head of the Entrepreneurship Cell at FSID, emphasized the critical role of corporate funding in the deep-tech landscape, noting that government grants often fall short of the necessary financial support. He stated, “This is where support from corporate entities like Honeywell comes into play. We get CSR money from these corporates and funnel it out directly to these start-ups. That becomes almost like a seed grant for the start-ups to go and build their products out on.” This model not only provides immediate financial relief but also bridges the gap between innovative ideas and market implementation by connecting start-ups with potential investors and partners.

Among the key start-ups benefiting from this initiative are Translead MedTech Pvt Ltd, Open MedLabs, Green Collar Agritech Solutions, Rait Setu, NatureWrks Technologies, and Openwater.in. These companies represent a cross-section of the burgeoning agritech, medtech, and environmental sectors, showcasing the diverse potential of deep-tech innovations in addressing pressing challenges.

As the agricultural sector increasingly turns to technology for solutions, the support from HHSIF and FSID could pave the way for groundbreaking advancements that not only enhance productivity but also promote sustainability. The implications of such partnerships are profound, as they not only fuel innovation but also contribute to the broader economic landscape by fostering entrepreneurship and creating job opportunities in emerging sectors.
