Tripura is making significant strides in agricultural innovation by adopting hydroponic farming technology, a shift designed to meet the evolving needs of local farmers. This new initiative emphasizes larger hydroponic setups, with a minimum size of 500 square meters, aligning with the standards set for hydroponic units across India. Previously, the state had experimented with portable hydroponic systems, which were smaller and less commercially viable. The current move aims to scale up these efforts, providing farmers with the tools they need to thrive in a challenging climate.
One notable hydroponic unit in Tripura covers an area of 560 square meters and is primarily focused on cultivating leafy vegetables, which are in high demand among consumers. The importance of this initiative is underscored by the state’s recent experiences with heavy rainfall and flooding, which have highlighted the need for climate-smart agricultural practices. Rajib Ghosh, Deputy Director of the Horticulture Research Center in Agartala, emphasized the benefits of this large-scale hydroponic farming approach. “The return that will come from this area of cultivation or farming will be very beneficial to the farmers and upgrade the financial conditions of farmers,” he stated.
The government has backed this initiative with an initial investment of Rs 55 lakh under a supportive scheme. While the upfront costs may seem steep, experts project that the returns will significantly outweigh these expenses within three to five years. Hydroponics not only offers a sustainable farming solution but also caters to farmers with limited land, allowing them to utilize vertical farming techniques to maximize productivity. This approach not only meets household food needs but also opens doors for commercial vegetable production, thereby enhancing the economic stability of the farming community.
In light of the recent floods that have impacted many farmers, the government has provided extensive financial assistance, reinforcing its commitment to agricultural resilience.
