UK Agri-Tech Faces Hurdles: Industry Gathers to Elevate Sector

The UK’s agri-tech sector, while thriving, is still grappling with significant hurdles that prevent it from reaching its full potential. Despite a vibrant ecosystem, the industry faces persistent challenges in scaling technology for widespread on-farm adoption and achieving commercial success. To address these issues head-on, Agri-TechE is hosting its Challenge Convention event at NIAB Park Farm, Cambridge, on March 4th. This event is open to anyone interested in agri-tech research, development, adoption, and policy, and aims to catalyze a much-needed shift in the industry.

Dr. Belinda Clarke, director of Agri-TechE, emphasizes the urgency of elevating UK agri-tech to the next level. “It is time to explore how we can elevate UK agri-tech to the next level,” she says. The event will focus on building investor confidence and devising creative financing methods for the innovation pipeline. This could include public-private partnerships and long-term commitments to research programs.

George Freeman MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Science & Technology in Agriculture (APPG Ag Science), will deliver the opening address. Freeman is a long-time champion of agri-tech and his involvement underscores the event’s significance.

The Challenge Convention builds on the findings from Agri-TechE’s Back to the Future project, which was launched in November 2024. This project called for a fresh approach to the UK’s agri-tech strategy, emphasizing the need for clear targets, a cohesive policy framework, and stronger links between research, technology, and on-farm productivity.

The event will be structured into three dedicated sessions: one for farmers, another for researchers and tech developers, and a third for investment and policy. Each session will delve into specific areas where more can be achieved, aiming to provide a comprehensive view of how to advance UK agri-tech.

Dr. Clarke hopes that the discussions will help identify what the industry needs to do to become the preeminent location for agri-tech development. “I am excited to see the outcomes. I hope it gives us a consensus of ambition that the industry can work towards fulfilling,” she concludes.

The Challenge Convention represents a pivotal moment for the UK agri-tech sector. By bringing together key stakeholders, the event aims to challenge existing conventions and agree on what needs to be fixed, changed, or delivered to unlock the untapped potential of UK agri-tech. The discussions and outcomes from this event could set the stage for a more integrated, innovative, and commercially successful agri-tech ecosystem in the UK.
