J&K’s Gongal Mela: Blending Tradition with Tech for Sustainable Farming

At the Gongal 10th SKAUST-K Agri Tech Mela, held at the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Shalimar, Agriculture Minister Javid Dar underscored the significance of integrating modern agricultural innovations with traditional farming practices. The two-day event, which took place on February 22-23, served as a platform to promote sustainable agriculture, enhance livestock management, and drive innovation in the farming sector.

Dar emphasized that the Gongal festival is not merely a celebration of agriculture but a pivotal opportunity to reaffirm commitments to sustainable farming practices, improve livestock management, and introduce innovative farming technologies. The festival featured a variety of exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations showcasing the latest in agricultural technologies. Farmers, scientists, and industry experts from across the region gathered to exchange knowledge and explore new techniques aimed at enhancing productivity.

The minister highlighted the need for agricultural expansion across Jammu and Kashmir, ensuring that farmers in both North and South Kashmir benefit from technological advancements. He reiterated the government’s dedication to supporting farmers through initiatives that blend traditional knowledge with modern solutions. “Our farmers are actively engaging with new innovations in agriculture and allied sectors,” Dar noted, adding that efforts are underway to promote awareness about advanced farming methods in different districts.

The Agriculture Department, in collaboration with SKUAST, plans to extend similar initiatives to other parts of the Valley. This move is expected to foster a more inclusive and technologically advanced agricultural landscape, benefiting farmers and the broader community.

The event underscored the importance of knowledge sharing and collaboration in driving agricultural progress. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the Gongal festival aims to create a synergistic environment where traditional wisdom meets cutting-edge technology, paving the way for a more sustainable and productive future in agriculture.
