Nanjing Forestry University’s DCS-YOLOv7 Revolutionizes Apple Picking Automation

In the heart of China’s thriving apple industry, a groundbreaking development is poised to revolutionize the way we think about agricultural automation. Zhipeng Zhao, a researcher at the College of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering, Nanjing Forestry University, has led a team that has developed a cutting-edge system for apple recognition and localization using deep learning and stereo vision technology. This innovation, published in the journal ‘Agronomy’, could significantly impact the future of apple picking and beyond.

The challenge of automating apple picking is multifaceted. Orchards present complex environments with variable lighting, occlusions from branches and leaves, and overlapping fruits. Zhao’s research addresses these issues head-on, proposing a fusion recognition method based on an improved YOLOv7 model.

“Our approach enhances the model’s sensitivity to small local features and improves its attention to the target region of interest,” Zhao explains. “By integrating a multi-scale feature fusion network and the CBAM attention mechanism, we’ve significantly boosted the model’s accuracy and precision.”

The improved YOLOv7 model, dubbed DCS-YOLOv7, achieves impressive results. With a recognition accuracy of 86.9%, recall of 80.5%, and average recognition precision of 87.1%, it outperforms the original YOLOv7 model by significant margins. The system’s ability to detect apple attitudes with an average angular error of just 3.964° and an accuracy of 94% is a game-changer for automated apple picking.

But the innovation doesn’t stop at recognition. The team also developed a method for 3D spatial localization using a depth camera and RGB-D images. This allows the system to obtain the 3D coordinates of the apple picking point with an error range of 0.01 mm–1.53 mm, ensuring precise and efficient picking.
