India’s Lignite Breakthrough: Solar Steam Generation

However, a groundbreaking study led by P. Gopinathan from the Resource Quality Assessment Division at CSIR-Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research in India, has unveiled a new dimension to lignite’s capabilities, potentially revolutionizing the energy sector.

The research, published in Scientific Reports, delves into the photothermal conversion properties of lignite, particularly focusing on sulfur-rich samples. This is a significant leap compared to the 31°C achieved by a blank sample under similar conditions.

Gopinathan explains, “The presence of organic and metal-bonded sulfide moieties in the lignite samples plays a crucial role in their photothermal performance. This discovery opens up new avenues for utilizing lignite in non-conventional energy applications.”
