Yamaha Acquires Robotics Plus, Launches U.S. Agtech Venture

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has made a significant move in the agricultural technology sector with the acquisition of New Zealand-based Robotics Plus and the launch of Yamaha Agriculture, a new U.S.-based agricultural technology company. This strategic acquisition is set to revolutionize the way specialty crop growers operate, addressing critical issues such as labor shortages and climate challenges through autonomous machinery and AI-driven digital solutions.

Robotics Plus, known for its expertise in robotics, automation, sensing, and data analytics, brings a wealth of innovative solutions to the table. One of its standout innovations is Prospr, an autonomous, multipurpose hybrid vehicle designed for spraying and weed control. Prospr is not just a tool for today; it is a platform for the future, with plans for additional attachments to handle tasks like mowing. This versatility is a game-changer for farmers, offering a flexible solution that can adapt to various agricultural needs.

In addition to Prospr, Robotics Plus has developed the Āporo Fruit Packer, which automates the fruit packaging process, and a robotic log scaler that automates log measurement for transportation. These innovations highlight Robotics Plus’s commitment to enhancing efficiency and sustainability in agriculture.

Yamaha Motor has been strategically investing in Robotics Plus since 2017, recognizing the potential of agricultural automation and the need to expand its presence in the agtech sector. With the acquisition, Robotics Plus will continue its operations from Tauranga, New Zealand, retaining skilled jobs and intellectual property. This move ensures that the company benefits from Yamaha Agriculture’s global support while maintaining its local expertise.

Steve Saunders, co-founder and CEO of Robotics Plus, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating that it solidifies a strong partnership with Yamaha Motor. He emphasized that the shared vision for precision agriculture will accelerate innovation, scale hardware manufacturing, and expand into key markets like the U.S. and beyond. This collaboration is poised to bring cutting-edge robotic technology to address major challenges in agriculture, such as labor shortages and sustainability.

Yamaha Agriculture has also acquired The Yield Technology Solutions, an Australian company specializing in AI-driven data analytics for agriculture. By integrating Prospr with advanced data analytics, Yamaha Agriculture aims to support wine grape, apple, and other specialty crop growers across North America, Australia, and New Zealand. This integration of autonomous technology with advanced data analytics is set to transform agricultural practices, making them more efficient and sustainable.

Robotics Plus, which has grown into a team of 130 experts with its robotic solutions deployed worldwide, is now poised for its next phase of growth under Yamaha Agriculture’s leadership. The company’s global market pursuit is aligned with Yamaha’s vision, and with the support of Yamaha Agriculture, Robotics Plus is set to further develop autonomous technology and AI-driven solutions for global agricultural markets. This partnership is not just about acquiring technology; it’s about fostering innovation and driving the future of agriculture.
