Western Water & Ag Leaders Converge in Reno for 2025 Conference

The third annual Western Water, Agricultural, and Environmental Law Conference is set to take place in Reno, Nevada, on June 19-20, 2025, offering a unique platform for discussions on critical issues affecting the Western United States. Co-hosted by the National Agricultural Law Center (NALC) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) Foundation, this year’s conference promises to deliver valuable insights from top state leadership on water, agriculture, and food policy.

One of the conference’s highlights will be the panel discussion titled “Western Water, Ag, & Food: Perspectives from State Departments of Agriculture.” Moderated by Wes Ward, Arkansas Secretary of Agriculture and current president of NASDA, the panel will feature prominent figures in Western agriculture:

J.J. Goicoechea, DVM, director of the Nevada Department of Agriculture, Christy Clark, director of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and Jeff Witte, director and secretary of the New Mexico Department of Agriculture. These leaders will share their perspectives on the unique challenges and opportunities facing Western agriculture, providing attendees with a comprehensive view of the region’s agricultural landscape.

The panel’s focus on Western water, agriculture, and food policy is particularly timely. The Western United States faces significant challenges, including water scarcity, climate change, and the need for sustainable agricultural practices. The insights shared by these state leaders will be invaluable for policymakers, farmers, and stakeholders seeking to address these issues.

The conference will also offer continuing education credit, making it a valuable opportunity for professionals in the field. Additionally, the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers will provide continuing education, enhancing the conference’s appeal to a broader audience.

The livestream option ensures that those unable to attend in person can still participate, making the conference accessible to a wider audience. This inclusivity is a testament to the organizers’ commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration across the agricultural sector.

The panel discussion will tackle a range of topics, from the impact of climate change on agriculture to the role of state departments in promoting sustainable practices. Attendees can expect an engaging, interactive session that addresses the challenges and opportunities facing Western agriculture. The session will also provide a platform for attendees to ask questions and gain insights directly from state agriculture leaders.

The conference’s focus on Western agriculture is particularly relevant given the region’s unique challenges and opportunities. The Western United States is home to diverse agricultural landscapes, from the arid deserts of Nevada to the lush farmlands of Montana. The panel’s discussion will highlight the importance of regional cooperation and innovation in addressing these challenges.
