In the heart of South Korea, at the IT Application Research Center of the Korea Electronics Technologies Institute (KETI) in Jeon-Ju, a groundbreaking development is set to revolutionize the agricultural sector. Led by Na Rae Baek, a team of researchers has developed a cutting-edge model called AS-YOLO, designed to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of stem removal in apple harvesting. This innovation, detailed in a recent study published in the journal Sensors, promises to significantly impact the future of agricultural automation.
The challenge of stem removal in fruit harvesting has long been a labor-intensive process, crucial for maintaining fruit quality and marketability. Traditional methods, while effective, often fall short in terms of speed and precision, particularly when dealing with smaller objects like stems. Baek and her team addressed this challenge head-on, proposing an enhanced version of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) model, dubbed AS-YOLO. This model integrates a ghost bottleneck and a global attention mechanism, significantly improving both computational efficiency and feature extraction capabilities.
“Our goal was to create a model that could handle the complexities of stem segmentation in real-time,” Baek explained. “By incorporating the ghost bottleneck, we reduced the number of parameters, making the model faster and more efficient. The global attention mechanism, on the other hand, allowed the model to capture the overall context within images, enhancing its ability to differentiate between stems and fruits.”
The results speak for themselves. AS-YOLO achieved an impressive mean average precision (mAP)@50 of 0.956 and mAP@50–95 of 0.782 across all classes, with a real-time inference speed of 129.8 frames per second (FPS). This performance not only outpaces existing models but also sets a new benchmark for real-time application in automated fruit-harvesting systems.
The implications of this research are vast. For the agricultural sector, AS-YOLO represents a significant leap forward in automation, promising to reduce labor costs and improve harvest efficiency. The model’s ability to process images in real-time makes it ideal for integration into agricultural robots, enabling them to perform stem removal tasks with unprecedented accuracy and speed.
“We envision a future where agricultural robots equipped with AS-YOLO can handle the entire harvesting process, from identification to stem removal,” Baek said. “This would not only improve the efficiency of fruit harvesting but also ensure consistent quality and marketability of the produce.”
The study, published in Sensors, also highlights the importance of datasets in validating the performance of such models. The researchers used a custom-built AppleStem-Segmentation (AS-Seg) dataset, which includes diverse apple data collected under various environmental conditions. This dataset will be made publicly available, ensuring reproducibility and supporting future research in the field.
