North Wales Agri-Tech Cluster Showcases Farming’s Future

Coleg Glynllifon, part of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, recently hosted an enlightening visit for the Agri-Tech Cymru Cluster, managed by M-SParc. The event underscored the cluster’s mission to foster collaboration and innovation within north Wales’ farming sector, bringing together a diverse group of organisations eager to explore the latest advancements in agri-tech.

The day began with a comprehensive presentation on the past, present, and future of agri-tech innovations being trialled at Glynllifon. Attendees, including representatives from Ambition North Wales, Bangor University, and Wynnstay, were then treated to a hands-on experience with some of the cutting-edge technologies housed within the college’s workshops.

One of the standout technologies demonstrated was the Clipex sheep handling system, showcasing how innovation can improve animal welfare and farm efficiency. The presentation also spotlighted several pioneering technologies, such as AgBot, the UK’s first fully autonomous, commercially available tractor. This technological marvel is set to revolutionise farming practices by increasing efficiency and reducing labour demands.

Another notable innovation was Chirrup.ai, an AI-powered tool designed to monitor biodiversity by identifying the calls of 148 different bird species. This technology not only aids in environmental conservation but also provides farmers with valuable data to enhance their farming practices.

The planned sheep-milking centre at Glynllifon was also a topic of discussion, highlighting a growing business opportunity for Welsh sheep farmers. The centre aims to develop sustainable and profitable practices within the sector.

The presentation extended to recent studies at Glynllifon, including trials of hydroponics to grow crops, TechnoGrazing systems for sheep and cattle, biological fly control in pig units, and LoRaWAN sensors to aid farmers’ decision-making. These initiatives demonstrate Glynllifon’s commitment to staying at the forefront of agricultural innovation.

Pryderi ap Rhisiart, M-SParc managing director, praised the event, stating, “Glynllifon provided the perfect setting to showcase the latest innovations shaping the future of agriculture. The Agri-Tech Cluster is all about fostering collaboration, and events like this highlight the power of bringing together industry, academia, and technology to drive progress.”

Alwyn Roberts, water project manager for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, echoed this sentiment, adding, “It was great to see the innovation taking place at Glynllifon and how improving farm production efficiency and protecting water quality go hand in hand. Events like these are important for the dissemination of the latest agri-tech developments and to advocate those win-win benefits for farm profitability and the wider environment.”

Martin Jardine, Grŵp Llandrillo Menai director of Agri Food, expressed his delight in hosting the event, noting, “Coleg Glynllifon has bolstered its capacity to deliver support for the agri-food sector and is well positioned to deliver knowledge transfer to partners and industry stakeholders. Looking ahead, Coleg Glynllifon will play a key role in delivering skills and continuing professional development for the sector.”

The event at Coleg Glynllifon served as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in driving the future of agriculture. As the sector continues to evolve, initiatives like the Agri-Tech Cymru Cluster will be instrumental in ensuring that north Wales remains at the cutting edge of agricultural technology.
