On April 14, 2025, the Yorkton AgTech Expo buzzed with energy as over 600 students from Yorkton and surrounding areas gathered to explore the future of agriculture technology careers. The event, held at the Yorkton Agricultural Grounds, was a collaborative effort between Agriculture in the Classroom Saskatchewan (AITC-SK) and Cornerstone Credit Union, aimed at providing high school students with an immersive, hands-on experience in the latest agricultural technology and food production innovations.
The expo featured twelve interactive stations, each designed to offer a unique, engaging experience. Students had the opportunity to operate drones for precision agriculture, program robots for automated farming, and even experiment with vertical farming techniques. These stations were staffed by volunteers from various agtech companies and educational institutions, who shared their real-world experiences and insights into the industry.
Leah Hermanson, Fund Development Manager with AITC-SK, emphasized the event’s career-driven focus. “It’s very much career driven around agriculture and agriculture technology,” she said. The expo was part of the national thinkAG career education initiative, which aims to inspire and educate students about the diverse and exciting career opportunities in agriculture.
The partnership with Cornerstone Credit Union was instrumental in bringing the AgTech Expo to life. The credit union’s support underscored its commitment to fostering innovation and growth in the local agricultural community. “We’re thrilled to partner with AITC-SK on this initiative,” said a representative from Cornerstone Credit Union. “Investing in our youth and showcasing the potential of agtech is crucial for the future of our industry.”
The AgTech Expo not only provided students with a glimpse into the future of agriculture but also highlighted the importance of STEM skills in the sector. As agriculture continues to evolve, driven by technological advancements, events like the AgTech Expo play a pivotal role in preparing the next generation of agricultural leaders. By engaging students in hands-on activities and connecting them with industry professionals, the expo helped to spark interest and inspire potential careers in agtech.
