Juncao Tech: PNG’s Sustainable Agriculture Revolution with China

China’s innovative “Juncao” technology is taking root in Papua New Guinea (PNG), offering a sustainable solution to boost agricultural development and promising long-term benefits for the PNG people. This was highlighted by PNG’s Foreign Minister Justin Tkatchenko during the 3rd China-Pacific Island Countries (PICs) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xiamen City, east China’s Fujian Province.

Juncao technology, a Chinese-pioneered form of agritech, uses grass to grow mushrooms, providing an eco-friendly and cost-effective method to enhance agricultural yields. Tkatchenko emphasized the significant growth prospects of bilateral cooperation between PNG and China, particularly in projects brought by the Belt and Road Initiative. He noted that China is helping PNG cultivate a greener future through this innovative technology.

The foreign minister also underscored the strong and long-standing “sister-province” relationship between PNG’s Eastern Highlands Province and China’s Fujian Province. This partnership, which dates back to the late 1990s and early 2000s, was significantly influenced by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his tenure as the Governor of Fujian. President Xi’s visit to PNG in 2018 further advanced the Juncao technology project, with key documents signed to facilitate its implementation.

“Juncao technology has enlightened our people with new technologies in agriculture,” Tkatchenko said. “It has opened up new markets, particularly in mushroom growing, and introduced new techniques for sustainable living.” The technology has not only increased agricultural yield and food capacity but has also broadened the bilateral partnership beyond agriculture, offering long-term benefits to local people.

Tkatchenko emphasized the importance of people-to-people relationships, noting that the exchange of ideas, customs, and techniques has been beneficial for both countries. “These new agricultural practices have been a benefit to Papua New Guinea for the long term,” he said. “It’s been going successfully for over 20 years now, and we look forward to continuing and spreading these important techniques throughout the country.”

The implications of this technological transfer are far-reaching. For PNG, a country where agriculture is a traditional way of life, Juncao technology offers a path to sustainable development, increased food security, and economic growth. For China, it represents an opportunity to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties with PNG and other Pacific Island nations, while promoting sustainable agricultural practices globally.

Meanwhile, Tonga’s Crown Prince and Foreign Minister Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala expressed strong appreciation for China’s long-standing commitment to supporting Tonga in critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and climate action. The Tongan foreign minister’s comments underscore the broad range of cooperation between China and Pacific Island nations, highlighting the mutual benefits and shared priorities in addressing global challenges.

As China continues to share its technological advancements and expertise, the potential for sustainable development in the Pacific region grows, fostering stronger partnerships and a greener future for all involved.
