Nuclear Tech Boosts Iran’s Crop Yields, Cuts Water Use & Waste

Iran is harnessing the power of nuclear radiation to revolutionize its agricultural sector, according to a senior official from the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI). Ebrahim Moghisseh, who spearheads agricultural research programs within the AEOI, revealed that the country has been employing nuclear technologies such as gamma radiation to develop crops with enhanced resilience to drought and superior yield potential.

This innovative approach has already yielded promising results. Two cotton seed varieties, named Fakhr and Jahesh, have demonstrated improved performance in farms where they were planted over the past year. Additionally, Iran has successfully developed two new rice seed varieties, Kian and Hasti. These varieties have been recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency for their remarkable properties, including a reduced water requirement and yields up to three times higher than conventional rice seeds.

The implications of these advancements are significant, particularly in the face of climate change and growing food demand. By utilizing nuclear technologies, Iran aims to bolster its agricultural output and mitigate food waste, addressing pressing concerns related to food security and sustainability.

Moreover, the AEOI has established radiation facilities across various locations in Iran to combat waste in agricultural warehouses. Moghisseh reported that radiation has effectively reduced pests in grain and bean storage facilities by up to 40%. This development underscores the potential of nuclear technologies in enhancing food preservation and minimizing losses.

Moghisseh emphasized the necessity of adopting modern agricultural methods and technologies, stating, “Given the growing demand for food … and given that droughts have happened in recent years because of climate change, there is no option left other than moving toward modern (agriculture) methods and technologies.”

Iran’s commitment to leveraging nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes has been steadfast, despite ongoing accusations from Western powers regarding its nuclear program. The country maintains that its nuclear activities are in full compliance with international laws and regulations governing the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
