Seoul Researchers Revolutionize Lettuce Farming with AI

In the heart of Seoul, researchers are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in smart farming, and their latest findings could revolutionize how we grow our food. Jung-Sun Gloria Kim, a leading figure from the Department of Biosystems Engineering at Seoul National University, has been delving into the world of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to create more efficient and accurate crop monitoring systems. Her latest study, published in Applied Sciences, compares different image preprocessing strategies for classifying the growth stages of butterhead lettuce in industrial plant factories. The implications for the energy sector are profound, as more efficient farming methods could lead to significant energy savings.

Imagine a future where every plant in a factory farm is monitored in real-time, with AI systems predicting growth stages with pinpoint accuracy. This is not just a distant dream; it’s a reality that Kim and her team are working towards. Their research focuses on two main data types: raw images and images processed through a technique called GrabCut–Watershed segmentation. The goal? To find out which method yields the most accurate and robust results.

The team trained a ResNet50-based transfer learning model on each dataset and then evaluated its performance. The results were striking. Models trained and tested within the same domain achieved impressive accuracy rates—99.65% for raw images and 97.75% for preprocessed images. However, when the models were tested across different domains, the performance varied significantly. “We found that models trained on raw images were much better at generalizing to new, unseen data,” Kim explains. “This is crucial for real-world applications where the environment can change rapidly.”

One of the key findings was the importance of domain consistency. While GrabCut–Watershed segmentation offered clearer visual inputs, it also limited the model’s ability to generalize due to reduced contextual richness. This oversimplification made it harder for the model to adapt to new situations, a critical factor in dynamic farming environments.

In terms of efficiency, the model trained on preprocessed images was the fastest, but this speed came at the cost of accuracy and generalization. On the other hand, the model trained on raw images was slightly slower but offered a more balanced performance, making it more viable for real-time deployment. “We need models that are not only fast but also accurate and adaptable,” Kim notes. “This balance is essential for the practical application of AI in smart farming.”

The study also highlighted the importance of inference efficiency. The model trained on raw images achieved the fastest inference speed without any additional preprocessing, making it a strong candidate for real-time monitoring systems. This could lead to significant energy savings in industrial plant factories, as more efficient monitoring systems require less computational power and, consequently, less energy.

Looking ahead, this research lays the groundwork for lightweight, real-time AI applications in smart farming. As Kim puts it, “The future of farming is smart, and AI is at the heart of it. Our findings provide a roadmap for developing more robust and generalizable models that can adapt to the ever-changing conditions of industrial plant factories.”

The energy sector stands to benefit greatly from these advancements. More efficient farming methods mean reduced energy consumption, lower operational costs, and a smaller carbon footprint.
