A landmark collaboration was forged in Colombo recently, as the Climate Vulnerable Forum and V20 (CVF-V20) joined hands with Genesis by Dilmah, an agri-entrepreneurship and sustainability innovation hub. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two entities marks a significant stride towards advancing sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in Sri Lanka.
The partnership, formalised by Dilhan C. Fernando, Chairman/CEO of Dilmah, and CVF Secretary General Mohamed Nasheed, aims to bolster cooperation on sustainable agriculture and low-carbon technology strategies. This alliance is poised to harness innovative, climate-smart solutions that build resilience in Sri Lanka, while also serving as a best practice model for other CVF-V20 member countries.
The CVF, an inter-governmental organisation representing countries disproportionately affected by climate change, has been instrumental in voicing the concerns of the most vulnerable nations. With over 70 member countries, the forum is committed to shaping effective climate action policies. The CVF has already registered Climate Prosperity Plans in 20 member countries, including Sri Lanka.
At the signing ceremony, Dilhan C. Fernando expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “The relationship between CVF and Genesis allows us to jointly identify, study and implement strategies that drive climate adaptation and mitigation, whilst aligning with UN SDGs and the goals of the shareholder.”
The implications of this partnership are far-reaching. For Sri Lanka, this means enhanced access to climate finance, a critical component in funding climate action. Sara Jane Ahamed, Managing Director & V20 Finance Advisor, underscored the importance of climate finance in attracting the necessary resources for climate action in CVF member countries. The CVF is actively engaging with the Sri Lankan government to facilitate access to climate funding at a national level.
This collaboration also sets a precedent for public-private partnerships in addressing climate change. By combining the expertise of a renowned tea company with the resources and influence of an international forum, this partnership can drive meaningful change in sustainable agriculture and climate resilience.
Moreover, the alliance sends a strong signal to other nations and businesses about the importance of collective action in tackling climate change. It highlights the need for innovative solutions and the role of climate finance in supporting these initiatives. As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, such collaborations offer a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of unity and shared purpose in building a sustainable future.
