Azerbaijan’s $3.42M Smart Greenhouse Revolution Begins

Baku, June 19, AZERTAC – In a significant stride towards sustainable agriculture and food security, the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Smart Greenhouse Complex was held on June 18, 2025. This pioneering project, a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry (MOFALI), the Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry Research and Development Center, Hankyong National University of the Republic of Korea, and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), marks a new era in Azerbaijan’s agricultural landscape.

The Smart Greenhouse Complex, with a budget of USD 3.42 million, is set to be established in the 11th Khoroo of Bayanzurkh District. The complex will be a hub of innovation, housing a vegetable research center, a training hall, a vegetable processing facility, an inventory warehouse, advanced and medium-technology greenhouses, vertical farming containers, open-field smart farms, and an agricultural technology park. The project, slated for completion between 2025 and 2028, aims to provide year-round produce supply, ensuring food safety and promoting sustainable agriculture.

The implications of this project are far-reaching. The complex will serve as a knowledge center, organizing meetings, seminars, and training programs for experts, researchers, and farmers. These programs will cover theories of smart greenhouse operation and farming technology, along with practical on-field training. This knowledge transfer will empower farmers with advanced techniques, boosting their income and restoring rural economies.

Moreover, the project will create a robust structure for year-round vegetable production, reducing Azerbaijan’s dependence on seasonal crops and imports. The integration of advanced technologies will also help develop farming methods adapted to climate change, a pressing concern in today’s world. The Smart Greenhouse Complex is not just a project; it’s a beacon of hope for a sustainable and food-secure future.

The collaboration between Azerbaijan and South Korea in this venture underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing global challenges like food security and climate change. As the world grapples with these issues, initiatives like the National Smart Greenhouse Complex serve as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience.
