Bangladesh’s IoT Hydroponics Revolutionizes Urban Farming

In the heart of Bangladesh, where population growth and shrinking arable land pose significant challenges to traditional farming, a groundbreaking IoT-based hydroponics system is revolutionizing small-scale agriculture. Developed by Md. Abdul Awal from the Department of Farm Power and Machinery at Bangladesh Agricultural University, this innovative system is set to transform how we approach crop cultivation, particularly in urban and resource-scarce environments.

The system, detailed in a recent study published in ‘Smart Agricultural Technology’ (translated as ‘Intelligent Agricultural Technology’), addresses the critical need for precise environmental monitoring in hydroponic farming. “Real-time monitoring of essential factors such as pH, temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), and electrical conductivity (EC) is crucial for maximizing yields,” Awal explains. “Existing data collection techniques are laborious and time-consuming, often leading to suboptimal crop performance.”

Awal’s IoT-based system integrates sensors with a microcontroller, utilizing Wi-Fi for real-time data processing through a dedicated mobile application. This seamless integration allows farmers to monitor and control hydroponic parameters effortlessly. “The system automatically activates relays to regulate acid and nutrient control pumps when parameters fall below thresholds, notifying users through the mobile app for prompt intervention,” Awal adds.

Performance testing of the system demonstrated impressive precision, with error percentages as low as 0.001% for pH and 0.002% for EC. The system was field-tested with spinach (Spinacia oleracea), maintaining ideal conditions consistently. “After implementing this system for spinach cultivation, we observed an average pH of 6.08 ± 0.15, temperature of 26 ± 1.2 °C, TDS of 1150 ± 198 ppm, and EC of 1.7 ± 0.45 mS/cm,” Awal reports.

The commercial implications of this research are profound. For the energy sector, the adoption of such smart agricultural technologies can lead to more efficient resource utilization, reducing the overall energy footprint of farming operations. As urbanization continues to encroach on agricultural land, hydroponic systems like Awal’s offer a sustainable solution for food production in limited spaces.
