Rwanda’s AI-IoT Breakthrough Revolutionizes Egg Quality Monitoring

In the heart of Rwanda, a groundbreaking innovation is set to revolutionize the poultry industry, merging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to transform how we monitor and analyze egg quality. Led by Omoy Kombe Hélène from the African Center of Excellence in Internet of Things at the University of Rwanda, this research introduces a cutting-edge system that promises to streamline egg quality assessment, offering real-time insights and enhancing efficiency.

The poultry industry has long grappled with the challenges of maintaining optimal egg quality during incubation. Environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and lighting play pivotal roles, and traditional methods of assessment often fall short in precision and efficiency. Hélène and her team have tackled these issues head-on, developing a web-based program that leverages a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) algorithm to provide real-time feedback on egg quality. The system, implemented on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense, demonstrated impressive performance metrics, achieving a TinyML classification F1-Score of 97.4% and an accuracy rate of 95.79%.
