On July 15, 2025, a significant step was taken to bolster the agricultural sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Bhumesh Sharma, Secretary of the J&K Advisory Board for Development of Kisans, along with Vikas Anand, Director of Horticulture, Kashmir, flagged off a group of 40 progressive farmers for a one-day field visit and training program. The event, focused on “How to double the income of farmers,” was organized in collaboration with the Directorate of Extension Education at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Science and Technology (SKUAST) Kashmir.
The initiative underscores the importance of exposing farmers to the latest research and best field practices developed by scientists and technocrats at SKUAST-Kashmir. Sharma emphasized the need for farmers to adopt modern agricultural technology to succeed in doubling their income, thereby contributing to sustainable agriculture development in the region.
One of the key points highlighted by Sharma was the optimal utilization of government initiatives and schemes available under the Horticulture Area Development Program (HADP). These schemes cover various sectors, including agriculture, horticulture, fisheries, floriculture, animal husbandry, sheep husbandry, and sericulture. He advised farmers to adopt integrated farming practices, which can help them maximize their farm income.
The reality of land fragmentation in Jammu and Kashmir was also addressed. With over 90% of the population directly or indirectly involved in agriculture, the average land holdings per family have dwindled to between 10 to 20 kanals. This makes it crucial for farmers to adopt multi-cropping and integrated farming approaches. Additionally, Sharma stressed the need to explore better marketing strategies for surplus crops, which can further enhance farmers’ income.
Vikas Anand, Director of Horticulture, Kashmir, appreciated the initiatives of the Kisan Advisory Board for organizing such farmer-friendly awareness programs. He encouraged the farmers to make the most of the one-day visit and training program, which aims to equip them with practical knowledge and skills.
The implications of this initiative are far-reaching. By introducing farmers to modern agricultural practices and technologies, the program aims to enhance productivity and sustainability in the region’s agriculture sector. Moreover, the focus on integrated farming and better marketing strategies can help farmers overcome the challenges posed by land fragmentation, ultimately leading to increased income and improved livelihoods.
The presence of key officials such as the Chief Horticulture Officer, Srinagar, District Subject Matter Specialist (SMS), and Assistant Director of Horticulture at the flag-off ceremony underscores the significance of this initiative. It reflects a concerted effort by the government and agricultural institutions to support and uplift the farming community in Jammu and Kashmir.
