Coleg Cambria Llysfasi, a renowned agricultural college near Ruthin, has taken a significant step forward in dairy farming technology with the installation of a smart agriculture system called HerdVision. This innovative technology aims to enhance animal welfare and boost milk production, marking a notable advancement in the college’s commitment to precision agriculture.
The HerdVision system employs 3D video monitoring to track the health and productivity of the college’s 280 dairy cows. Using 2D and 3D infrared cameras, smart algorithms, and edge processing, the system gathers crucial health and mobility data. This information is then sent to a server and made available on an app within seconds, providing real-time insights to farm staff.
Sam Rowlands, Member of the Senedd for North Wales, expressed his enthusiasm for the development, stating, “I am always pleased to hear about the continual development of Coleg Cambria Llysfasi, especially when it involves new technology which can only add to the learning experience.” He further emphasized the benefits for future dairy farmers studying at the college, highlighting the potential for improved animal welfare and economic and environmental advantages.
Dewi Jones, farm manager at Llysfasi, shared his positive experiences with the system since its installation in September. “The system monitors locomotion and body condition, which is invaluable when considering milk production, fertility, foot trimming, and other factors,” he said. Jones also noted the system’s utility for students, as it provides detailed information on individual cows and group dynamics, aiding in the transition towards precision agriculture.
One of the standout features of HerdVision is its ‘early warning’ system for health issues. The technology does not replace the skill and instinct of farmers but complements it by providing additional information to shape decision-making. “It can anticipate when problems arise and how best to deal with them,” Jones explained. Each cow passes through the cameras twice a day, with data delivered directly to farm staff. This data is also accessible to farmers, vets, and nutritionists through a web interface, enabling precise monitoring and decision-making throughout the year.
The implications of this technology are far-reaching. By adopting HerdVision, Coleg Cambria Llysfasi is not only enhancing its educational offerings but also contributing to the broader agricultural community. The system’s ability to provide real-time data and early warnings can lead to more proactive and informed decision-making, ultimately improving animal welfare and farm productivity. This move underscores the college’s commitment to embracing new technologies and preparing students for the future of farming.
