Sabah Leaps Into Digital Farming Future with New AgTech Initiative

KOTA KINABALU: Plans to enhance digital agriculture technology (AgTech) adoption among farmers in Kapayan and Penampang were unveiled on 19 July 2025 by Kapayan Assemblywoman Datuk Jannie Lasimbang. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernise Sabah’s farming sector, aiming to improve productivity, efficiency, and sustainability for local farmers.

During a site visit to four of the eight proposed farms, Datuk Jannie, accompanied by Navin Sinnathamby from the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), introduced advanced digital farming systems. These technologies are designed to transform traditional farming methods, ensuring that local farmers keep pace with the digital era.

“This initiative reflects our shared commitment to advancing Digital AgTech in Sabah,” said Jannie. She also acknowledged the support of Minister of Digital, Gobind Singh Deo, in driving technological innovation within the agricultural sector.

Sabah’s growing role in digital agriculture

Sabah has emerged as a key player in Malaysia’s Digital AgTech landscape, ranking as the second-highest recipient of such systems in the country. In 2024, over 70 digital farming systems were installed across the state, with an additional 10 planned for 2025. Notably, five of these new systems will incorporate artificial intelligence to enhance data-driven farming practices.

Nationally, the impact of digital agriculture is already evident, with over 600 systems deployed, benefiting more than 30,000 agropreneurs. These technologies are helping farmers manage resources more efficiently while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

A shift towards smarter farming

The adoption of digital systems is expected to bring significant changes to Sabah’s agricultural sector. By empowering small-scale farmers and encouraging youth involvement, these technologies aim to make farming more inclusive and resilient. “These smart technologies have the potential to revolutionise how we farm,” Jannie noted, highlighting the broader implications for productivity and sustainability.

Furthermore, the integration of digital agriculture aligns with Sabah’s goals to strengthen its position within the growing digital economy. As more farmers adopt these technologies, the state is likely to see increased efficiency and competitiveness in its agricultural output.

The initiative also underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies and local communities. By working together, stakeholders can ensure that the benefits of digital transformation are accessible to all farmers, regardless of scale or experience. This approach not only modernises farming practices but also fosters a more connected and innovative agricultural sector in Sabah.
