Queensland SMEs: Innovate to Grow with CSIRO’s New R&D Program

Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has announced a new opportunity for Queensland-based small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agriculture, food, and related technology sectors. The call for applications to the Innovate to Grow program, part of the Queensland Government-funded Regional University Industry Collaboration (RUIC) program, was made on 21 July 2025.

The Innovate to Grow program is a research and development (R&D) initiative designed to assist businesses in developing and implementing research strategies. Participants will receive guidance from experienced researchers and industry mentors, aiming to bridge the gap between innovative concepts and market-ready products.

Dr George Feast, CSIRO’s Director for SME Connect Programs, emphasized the potential of Queensland businesses and the importance of the right support in transforming ideas into commercial successes. “We’re helping SMEs with a pathway from concept to commercialisation, with access to world-class researchers at regional Queensland universities, and matched R&D support,” Dr Feast stated.

The significance of such collaborations is underscored by a recent CSIRO report, which highlights the benefits of partnerships between SMEs and research institutions. These collaborations can lead to the development of new products and services, accelerate market entry, and address industry-specific challenges and opportunities.

Lloyd Tailby, a participant from Erkmark Australia who completed the Innovate to Grow program in 2025, shared his positive experience. “The program was a big help in guiding me to refine the problem and progress with collaboration,” Mr Tailby said. He encouraged other small businesses with innovative ideas to explore the R&D opportunities offered by the program.

The Innovate to Grow: Agriculture, Food & Technology – Queensland program is open to SMEs involved in various sectors, including agritech, food and beverage manufacturing, crop innovation, livestock and aquaculture, alternative proteins, packaging, handling and storage, transport, logistics, provenance, and other related fields.

This initiative represents a significant step in fostering innovation and growth within Queensland’s agricultural and food technology sectors. By providing SMEs with access to research expertise and funding, the program aims to drive the development of new solutions and enhance the competitiveness of local businesses.

Applications for the program are now open, and interested SMEs are encouraged to learn more and apply. This opportunity not only supports individual businesses but also contributes to the broader advancement of agricultural and food technologies in Queensland.
