DTN Acquires Grain Discovery to Boost AgTech Innovations

DTN, a global leader in operational decisioning for energy, agriculture, and weather-driven industries, has announced its acquisition of Grain Discovery, a Canadian agtech company. This strategic move is set to enhance DTN’s offerings, particularly with the upcoming launch of DTN Ag Hub in the fall.

Grain Discovery’s platform is known for facilitating seamless grain transactions, providing CRM-style tools for managing grower relationships, capturing farm-level sustainability data, and offering end-to-end traceability. This complete digital workflow serves grain buyers, advisors, and producers alike. The acquisition will bolster DTN Ag Hub, a real-time digital twin of U.S. agriculture at the farm level, designed to address critical questions faced by all players in the agricultural supply chain.

Grey Montgomery, General Manager for Agriculture at DTN, emphasized the importance of real-time access for grain buyers and producers. “Grain buyers and producers need to have immediate access to each other in order to make real-time decisions whether they’re at their desk, in a truck, or standing in a field,” he said. The acquisition of Grain Discovery is expected to accelerate the development of multiple DTN ag solutions, including the MyDTN app, AgHost, Grain Portal, and sustainability solutions. Notably, it will aid ethanol plants in qualifying for 45z tax credits by providing detailed sustainability data.

The Grain Discovery Farmer Portal, which connects grain originators and farmers through a branded mobile app, streamlines bid, offer, and contract management. It also opens new avenues for participating in digital sustainability programs. Rory O’Sullivan, co-founder and CEO of Grain Discovery, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition. “We have built a great product and are making major investments in traceability and AI,” he said. “DTN delivers us brand trust and access to hundreds of customers across the U.S. market.”

Existing Grain Discovery customers will continue to experience business as usual in the immediate term, with all current tools and apps remaining fully operational and supported. Over the next year, these customers will gain access to expanded DTN insights, sustainability tools, and a broader commercial network.

This acquisition underscores DTN’s commitment to providing expert analysis of commodity markets, hyper-local weather and disease insights, and real-time industry updates. By integrating Grain Discovery’s capabilities, DTN aims to further support farmers and agribusinesses in their efforts to feed the world, enhancing productivity and profitability across the sector.

The implications of this acquisition are significant. For DTN, it means an expanded suite of tools and a stronger foothold in the agtech market. For Grain Discovery, it offers access to a larger customer base and the resources of a well-established industry leader. For farmers and agribusinesses, it promises more comprehensive and integrated solutions to manage their operations and sustainability efforts.
