Brazil’s Smartphone App Revolutionizes Pantaneiro Lamb Slaughter Timing

In the heart of Brazil, a groundbreaking study led by Adrielly Lais Alves da Silva from the Faculty of Agrarian Sciences at the Federal University of Grande Dourados is revolutionizing the way farmers predict the optimal slaughter point for Pantaneiro lambs. The research, published in the journal *AgriEngineering* (translated to English as *Agricultural Engineering*), introduces a novel approach that combines traditional measurements with modern technology to enhance decision-making in lamb production.

The study focuses on predicting subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) in Pantaneiro lambs using pre-slaughter parameters such as body weight, body condition score, and skinfold measurements taken with an adipometer. These measurements are then inputted into a smartphone application, providing farmers with real-time data to determine the ideal time for slaughter.

“By integrating accessible technologies like the adipometer with traditional variables, we’ve created a tool that is not only portable but also objective and immediate,” says da Silva. This innovation offers a significant advantage over conventional techniques such as ultrasound or visual scoring, which can be time-consuming and less precise.

The research involved evaluating 45 Pantaneiro lambs finished in a feedlot and slaughtered at different body weights. Each weight class exhibited distinct carcass patterns when all parameters were included in the model. Exploratory analysis revealed statistical significance for all variables, with body weight and lumbar skinfold thickness (LST) being selected to construct the predictive equation, achieving an R-squared value of 55.44%.

The developed application allows farmers to estimate SFT based on simple measurements, facilitating in-field decision-making. This tool represents an effective alternative for production systems aimed at optimizing and enhancing the value of lamb carcasses.

The implications of this research extend beyond the immediate benefits to lamb producers. As digital technologies continue to transform the agriculture sector, tools like this application can play a crucial role in data-driven decision-making.
