Bulgarian Study Reveals Water-Saving Secrets for Garlic Farming

In the heart of Bulgaria, a groundbreaking study is reshaping our understanding of sustainable agriculture and the optimal use of natural resources. Dr. Vesela Petrova-Branicheva, a leading researcher at the Institute of Soil Science, Agrotechnologies and Plant Protection “N. Poushkarov” in Sofia, has been investigating the impact of different irrigation techniques on the growth of Bulgarian garlic varieties. Her work, published in the journal ‘Растениевъдни науки’ (translated as ‘Plant Sciences’), offers promising insights for farmers and the energy sector alike.

The study, conducted in 2023, explored various irrigation regimes to mitigate the effects of drought and ensure stable crop production. “Irrigation is a major factor and an effective means of limiting or preventing the stressful impact of drought on agricultural crops,” Dr. Petrova-Branicheva explained. The experiments involved different irrigation techniques, including subsoil drip irrigation and surface drip irrigation, with varying irrigation rates.

The results were striking. The optimal irrigation regime (V1) yielded the highest crop production at 750 kg per decare (dka). However, even with a 50% reduction in irrigation rates, the crops still produced significant yields, albeit lower. “The reduction in the size of the irrigation rates by 50% for surface and underground placement of the irrigation wings leads to a reduction in yield by 34 and 23%,” noted Dr. Petrova-Branicheva. This finding is particularly relevant in water-deficit regions, offering a viable strategy for sustainable agriculture.

The implications for the energy sector are substantial. Efficient water use in agriculture can lead to significant energy savings, as pumping and distributing water accounts for a considerable portion of energy consumption in farming. By optimizing irrigation techniques, farmers can reduce their energy footprint while maintaining crop yields.
