Inheriting or purchasing farmland is a significant milestone, but it also comes with a host of important decisions and responsibilities. For those new to farmland ownership, understanding the legal and economic implications of their choices is crucial. To address these needs, the National Agricultural Law Center (NALC) is hosting a webinar titled “So Now You Own a Farm: A Beginner’s Guide to Farmland Ownership” on Wednesday, October 15, from 11 a.m. to noon Central/noon to 1 p.m. Eastern. This free event aims to provide clarity and practical guidance for first-time landowners and the professionals who advise them.
The webinar will delve into the key considerations for new farmland owners, including whether to farm the land, lease it, sell it, or preserve it. Attendees will gain insights into estimating the value of farmland, understanding the legal and economic aspects of different ownership options, and protecting farmland from potential risks. This session is based on the “Beginner’s Guide to Farmland Ownership,” a collaborative publication by the NALC, The Ohio State University Agricultural and Resource Law Program, and the National Agricultural Library.
Leading the discussion will be Peggy Kirk Hall and Robert Moore, both attorneys with The Ohio State University Agricultural and Resource Law Program. Hall, who serves as the program’s director, has a wealth of experience in agribusiness law and has been recognized for her excellence and service in the field. Moore, who grew up on a dairy farm in Ohio, brings a unique perspective with his extensive background in farm succession planning, taxation, and business entities. Their combined expertise ensures that attendees will receive well-rounded, practical advice tailored to the complexities of farmland ownership.
“This session is designed to help new farmland owners understand the unique considerations that come with agricultural property,” Hall said. “Whether you’re deciding what to do with your land, or advising someone who is, the goal is to provide clarity and practical guidance.”
The implications of this webinar extend beyond the immediate attendees. As more individuals inherit or purchase farmland, the need for informed decision-making becomes increasingly important. The webinar offers a valuable opportunity for landowners to gain a better understanding of their options and responsibilities, ultimately contributing to more sustainable and productive use of agricultural land.
For those interested in participating, registration is available online. The webinar promises to be an informative and engaging session, providing essential knowledge for anyone navigating the complexities of farmland ownership. By offering practical strategies and legal insights, the NALC aims to empower new landowners to make informed decisions that will benefit both their own interests and the broader agricultural community.
