Newberry Secures $5.6M Boost for AgTech Innovation Park

In a significant boost to the agritech sector, the City of Newberry, Florida, has been awarded a $5.6 million grant from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund. The funds, allocated by Governor Ron DeSantis, are earmarked for enhancing the infrastructure of the AgFoodTech Innovation Park, a hub for agricultural technology innovation.

The grant will facilitate roadway and water infrastructure improvements, laying the groundwork for future advancements in the AgTech industry. This sector has been cultivating in Newberry for about a decade, and the grant is seen as a bridge between the city’s agricultural past and its tech-driven future.

The announcement comes on the heels of Harvest Singularity’s recent investment in the innovation park. The company plans to establish two hydroponic greenhouses, the first of which is set to be planted next year. These greenhouses, operated by robotics and artificial intelligence, are expected to open in 2027, marking a significant leap in agricultural technology.

Mayor Tim Marden highlighted the importance of this development, stating, “I think we all kind of recognized that we have a growing population and a shrinking amount of acreage that’s available to grow food. So this really is maximizing and taking advantage of the technology that frankly is coming out of the University of Florida.”

Each greenhouse represents a $66 million investment, bringing the total investment to $132 million. This substantial financial commitment is expected to yield significant employment opportunities. Each greenhouse is projected to employ around 55-60 people, and Governor DeSantis has stated that the grant will create 790 new jobs in the city.
