Taiwan Boosts Indonesia Agriculture Ties with New Projects

In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, Taiwan has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening partnerships with Indonesia, with a particular focus on agriculture. Bruce Hung, the Head of the Taipei Economic and Trade Office (TETO) Representative, expressed this commitment during the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) Achievements Showcase in Jakarta on Thursday, November 27, 2025.

Hung emphasized Taiwan’s dedication to being a reliable partner in Indonesia’s development, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in agriculture, technology, education, and talent development. Since its establishment in 1976, the TTM has played a pivotal role in supporting Indonesia’s agricultural sector. Through the introduction of advanced cultivation techniques, the mission has enhanced the quality of agricultural products for farmers across the archipelago.

The impact of this support is evident in regions like Karawang, where local farmers have improved their cultivation techniques and product quality, leading to increased income. Similarly, in North Sumatra, the TTM has collaborated with farmers to boost the yield and quality of garlic and shallots. These initiatives align with Indonesia’s national policy for food self-sufficiency, actively promoted by President Prabowo amid global food security challenges.

Looking ahead, Taiwan plans to launch two new projects in South Sulawesi and West Java next year, focusing on corn and vegetable seed production to strengthen the marketing system. This move is expected to further enhance agricultural productivity and food security in Indonesia.

Beyond agriculture, the close partnership between Indonesia and Taiwan has fostered a significant Indonesian community in Taiwan, numbering around 400,000. Hung noted that these individuals, who are neighbors, colleagues, and family, nurture relations that extend beyond government cooperation, rooted in warm and sincere interpersonal connections.

As Indonesia continues to prioritize food self-sufficiency and economic development, Taiwan’s commitment to cooperation in various sectors is poised to play a crucial role. The ongoing collaboration between the two nations not only strengthens agricultural practices but also fosters a deeper, more meaningful relationship that benefits both societies.
