Uttar Pradesh Farmers Embrace AI and Drones for Modern Agriculture

In a significant stride towards modernizing agriculture, farmers in Uttar Pradesh are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology through the state government’s innovative “Kisan Pathshala” programme. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional farming practices and cutting-edge, technology-driven agricultural methods.

For the first time, women agricultural volunteers, known as Krishi Sakhis, have been assigned pivotal roles alongside male farmers. This inclusion is part of a broader effort to improve technical knowledge, promote modern farming practices, and raise awareness about government schemes among cultivators. The programme is making waves in Prayagraj district, where Kisan Pathshalas are being organized in 575 villages, benefiting a large number of farmers and expanding access to technology-based agricultural solutions.

Deputy Director of Agriculture in Prayagraj, Pawan Kumar Vishwakarma, highlighted that the programme began on December 14. He emphasized that technologies such as drones equipped with multispectral sensors are revolutionizing crop monitoring, soil assessment, and the identification of water stress or nutrient deficiencies. AI-based precision spraying allows for targeted use of fertilisers and pesticides, while early detection of pests and diseases supports timely treatment. Data analysis also aids in yield prediction, irrigation planning, and nutrient management.

The state budget has laid stress on strengthening the agriculture sector and increasing farmers’ income. Officials assert that access to advanced techniques and technology is essential to achieve these goals. The department of agriculture is conducting the sessions under the initiative “The Million Farmers School 8.0,” translating budget provisions into on-ground training by connecting farmers with modern technology.

Participants in the Kisan Pathshala are given guidance on advanced practices, including the use of drones and AI in agriculture. The sessions also include interactions with trained “Namo Drone Didis,” along with experts and resource persons specialising in AI-based farming applications. This year, skilled women farmers are attending the sessions as special guests, along with two progressive male farmers who are sharing their experiences.

Officials mentioned that farmers’ learning will also be assessed through a competition, with top performers receiving seed and pesticide packets. This initiative not only equips farmers with the tools to enhance productivity but also fosters a sense of community and shared learning among participants.

The implications of this programme are far-reaching. By integrating AI and drone technology into agricultural practices, farmers can achieve higher crop yields, reduce input costs, and adopt sustainable farming methods. The inclusion of women as Krishi Sakhis is a progressive step towards gender equality in agriculture, ensuring that women have equal opportunities to contribute to and benefit from technological advancements.
