Farmers of the Year 2025 Honored for Innovation and Sustainability

In a celebration of agricultural innovation and sustainability, ten outstanding farmers, including three award winners, were honored at the “Rak Ban Kerd Farmers of the Year 2025” awards. The event recognized Mr. Tharaphong Wongwattanakit, Mr. Santisuk Phutphrom, and Mr. Apichat Poolied for their exceptional contributions to modern farming practices.

The 17th “Rak Ban Kerd Farmers of the Year” awards highlighted farmers who leverage technology to manage natural resources sustainably. Boonchai Bencharongkul, chairman of the Ruam Duay Chuay Kan Sam Nuek Rak Ban Kerd Foundation, noted a significant trend: “Many young people are returning to agriculture as large numbers move back to their hometowns to work closer to their parents and families, contributing to the prosperity of local communities.” He emphasized that critical success factors for farmers include using agricultural technology and social media tools. The foundation has developed an e-book featuring 200 successful cases of farmers using technology, aiming to build a network that helps newcomers reduce risk.

Tharaphong Wongwattanakit, owner of Gardener House in Ratchaburi province, was the first winner. He transitioned from a salaried professional to farming, applying the Internet of Things and automated irrigation to manage an organic coconut plantation with high precision. Mr. Tharaphong integrated modern technology with local wisdom by using parasitoid wasps for pest control, raising stingless bees for pollination, and creating “green buffers” around the farm. His farm’s success serves as a powerful blueprint for the latest generation of tech-savvy farmers.

Santisuk Phutphrom from Khao Phra Chao Coffee in Chumphon province was awarded runner-up. He transformed this local coffee business into a fully integrated organic enterprise. The farm also serves as a learning center, sharing expertise with the local community to elevate livelihoods and create sustainable income.

Third place went to Apichat Poolied from Baan Lek Pa Yai Earthworm Farm in Phatthalung province. The former engineer created value from the smallest scale under the “from waste to value” concept. The farm integrates smart farming technology to precisely control temperature and humidity, ensuring optimal conditions. This expertise has evolved into the production of high-quality microbial products and premium soil conditioners.

Sigve Brekke, group chief executive of True Corporation Plc, highlighted the company’s long-standing support for Thai farmers. Over the past 17 years, True has provided new skills to farmers through its partnership with the foundation and the Department of Agricultural Extension. He affirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the farming sector in becoming more environmentally friendly, smarter, stronger, and more resilient to change.

According to Peeraphan Korthong, director-general of the Department of Agricultural Extension, there are 558,553 smart farmers registered with the department, of which 252,333 individuals are categorized as young smart farmers. Narumol Sanguanvong, deputy permanent secretary of the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry, emphasized that Thai farmers are adapting by developing knowledge and applying innovation on their farms. She stressed the importance of looking across the entire supply chain—from production to packaging, domestic and international standards, and export market opportunities—to ensure sustainability and competitiveness in the global market.

The “Rak Ban Kerd Farmers of the Year 2025” awards not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the broader implications for the agricultural sector. As young farmers increasingly adopt technology and sustainable practices, they are paving the way for a more resilient and prosperous future for Thai agriculture. The event serves as a testament to the potential of innovation and community collaboration in driving agricultural progress.
