In the burgeoning world of hemp processing, a new study is shedding light on how temperature can significantly impact the yield and quality of hemp seed oil. This research, led by Aymane Allay from the Laboratory of Agricultural Production Improvement, Biotechnology, and Environment at Mohammed I University, delves into the effects of screw press extraction temperatures on hemp oil, offering valuable insights for the industry.

The findings reveal that temperature plays a crucial role in oil yield, with the maximum yield of 21.82% achieved at 100°C. This represents an impressive 4% improvement over cold pressing at 30°C.
“Temperature significantly affects the yield and quality of hemp oil,” Allay explains. “While higher temperatures can increase yield, they can also compromise the oil’s quality.”
The study found that increasing the extraction temperature from 30°C to 140°C resulted in a higher tocopherol content, which is beneficial for the oil’s antioxidant properties. However, higher temperatures also led to a decrease in oil quality, with higher peroxide values and a slight decrease in oxidation stability. Additionally, the chlorophyll-a content decreased with higher temperatures, affecting the oil’s color.
Despite these changes, the fatty acid profiles of the oil remained constant across different thermal regimes. This consistency is crucial for maintaining the oil’s nutritional value and commercial viability.
