Apocynum Fibers Unlock Textile Goldmine: Study Reveals *A. venetum*’

In the vast landscape of agricultural innovation, a recent study has shed light on the untapped potential of Apocynum fibers, offering promising avenues for the textile industry and farmers alike. The research, published in *Industrial Crops and Products*, delves into the differences between two varieties of Apocynum—*Apocynum pictum* (A. pictum) and *Apocynum venetum* (A. venetum)—and their implications for fiber production.

The study, led by Li Jiang from the State Key Laboratory of Desert and Oasis Ecology at the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, reveals that *A. venetum* fibers boast a 42.86% higher tenacity compared to *A. pictum*. This significant difference in strength could translate into more durable and high-quality textiles, a boon for manufacturers seeking sustainable and robust fiber sources.

“Our findings indicate that *A. venetum* fibers not only exhibit superior mechanical properties but also possess a unique chemical composition that enhances their spinnability and overall performance,” said Li Jiang. The research highlights that *A. venetum* fibers contain higher levels of cellulose and pectin, and lower levels of lignin, a compositional profile that is highly favorable for textile applications.

The study also employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to examine the surface characteristics of the fibers. It was found that *A. venetum* fibers have a rougher surface with more adhered metabolites, which could contribute to their enhanced functional properties. Additionally, the metabolomic analysis revealed that *A. venetum* fibers are enriched with 507 differentially accumulated metabolites, primarily flavonoids and phenolic acids. These compounds are known for their antioxidant and UV-protective properties, adding another layer of value to the fibers.

The commercial implications of this research are substantial. For farmers, cultivating *A. venetum* could open up new revenue streams, as the demand for high-quality, sustainable fibers continues to grow.
